The city we're getting married in

Welcome to Kolkata

How to get here, and what to do while you're in town

Getting here

Travel

Landing, moving around, and what December feels like here

Airport
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU)
Roughly 20–30 minutes to Salt Lake and Lake Town, 40–50 minutes to central Kolkata depending on traffic. All our venues are on the airport side of the city, which helps.
Getting around
Yatri Sathi, Uber, inDrive and Rapido — in roughly that order
Yatri Sathi is the West Bengal government app and honestly the most reliable here. inDrive lets you negotiate the fare, and Rapido bike taxis are quickest through traffic if you're travelling light. Uber works fine. Skip Ola — it's unreliable in Kolkata. Yellow Ambassador taxis are iconic but you'll have to haggle. The metro is clean and fast if you're heading into the centre.
Weather in December
Kolkata's best season — around 13–26°C
Warm sunny days, genuinely cool evenings. Bring a shawl, jacket or layers for the outdoor evening functions — the Sangeet and Reception both run late.
Flying internationally?
Most nationalities can apply for an India e-Visa online
Apply at least two weeks ahead at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Pick up an Airtel or Jio SIM at the airport on arrival — you'll want data for cabs and maps.
Money
Indian Rupee (₹). Cards work in hotels and restaurants
Carry some cash for markets, small cafés and tipping. UPI is everywhere but usually needs an Indian bank account.
If you're staying on

Things to do in Kolkata

Our draft list — we'll keep adding as we argue about it

🏛️

Victoria Memorial

The city's landmark — white marble, huge gardens, best at golden hour. The museum inside is genuinely good.

Must see
🌉

Howrah Bridge & Prinsep Ghat

Go to Prinsep Ghat at sunset for the river, the boats and the light. Howrah Bridge is best seen from the water.

Sunset
🎨

Kumartuli

The idol-makers' quarter — narrow lanes full of artisans sculpting clay deities by hand. Unlike anywhere else in India.

Our favourite
📚

College Street

The world's largest second-hand book market. Stop at Indian Coffee House for adda and terrible-but-essential coffee.

🛕

Dakshineswar & Belur Math

Two riverside temples, best done together by ferry. Peaceful, spiritual, and a proper break from the city noise.

Half day
🍽️

Eat properly

Kathi rolls at Nizam's, biryani at Arsalan, Bengali thali at 6 Ballygunge Place, and rosogolla from Balaram Mullick.

Non-negotiable
🛍️

New Market & Gariahat

For sarees, kurtas, jewellery and general chaos. Bargain — the first price is never the price.

🚂

Day trip: Shantiniketan

Tagore's university town, about three hours away. Art, craft markets and a completely different pace.
